AoG is a strategy role-playing game where you control an influential character in one of the ages of war and strife that occurred in the history of Aelia. It is a strategy game in that you may build cities, raise armies, and march into battle. It is a role-playing game in that you control a single character, who can grow and develop, amass a treasury of magical artifacts, and increase in power and prestige. Options are many: you may serve as a loyal magistrate, working to develop the civil infrastructure of a bustling metropolis; you may be a noble general, leading your lord's army into battle for glory and honor; you may even be a mercenary adventurer, engaging in quests, espionage, recon, and rescue missions.
